FINCHLEY ROAD.
Library, now an arts centre. 1897. By Arnold S Tayler.
Extended 1909 and 1926. Red brick, stone dressings, slate
roofs. Corner site; Arkwright Road elevation basically
symmetrical. 2 outer gabled wings set forward, 3 inner
gableted bays.
EXTERIOR: 2 and 2 1/2 storeys. To left; 4-light oriel window
over 3 single lights beneath embattled parapet. Louvred light
to gable. Brick sill and impost bands. Polygonal belfry on
ridge, a solid base surmounted by ouvres, beneath ogival cap
with finial. Main block; the bays subdivided between the
windows by stepped stone-dressed buttresses. To left and
right, mullion and transom windows of 2 x 3 lights, beneath
gablet, and flanked by similar 2 x 2 light windows. Central
entrance through buttressed porch set forward. Stone parapet
with blind arcade, over Tudor-style arched stone moulded
entrance. Above, 2-light window beneath gablet. Double flight
of stone steps between brick retaining wall with moulded stone
coping. Ground floor windows, following rhythm of upper storey
but variously mullion and transom and casements. Similar
dressings. Right hand wing; pair of stone niches beneath
canopies at 1st floor level. Louvred gable light. 3 ground
floor openings. Square belfry set back on ridge. Finchley Road
elevation; 2 storeys 5 bays, the 2nd to 4th set forward on
square bays, and beneath gablets. 1st floor stone mullion and
transom windows, alternately 2 x 2 and 2 x 3 lights, linked by
continuous flush stone band at transom level. Ground floor
similar with timber casements to 2nd to 4th bays. To left,
former entrance with elliptical head beneath 4-light overlight
with small leaded panes and beneath elliptical parapet.
INTERIOR: principal rooms, now studios, with canted ribbed
ceilings with original ventilation grilles. Room to right of
entrance has iron spiral staircase to upper level.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached to Arkwright Road elevation,
pair of gate piers of banded brickwork and stone, with stone
coping and having iron overthrow. Low parapet wall links
similar piers, some with ball finials, and 2 with overthrow
and leading to secondary entrance.
