Ardsley Mill and attached engine house and chimney
II
Steam powered worsted spinning mill and attached engine house and chimney. 1912-13, with minor late C20 alterations. Built for Thomas Ambler & Sons by the Yorkshire Hennebique Construction Co Ltd. Reinforced concrete with brick infill and a flat cement and bitumen roof. Two storey over basement. Three bays by seventeen bays with a four storey tower at the centre of the north west side. Each bay has three windows with brick dividing piers. Curved and wavy concrete parapet. Main street front to south west has nine three-light casement windows. Upper two floors also have nine nine-light windows, the lower brick panels have attached lettering reading:- THOMAS AMBLER INTERNATIONAL FINE WORSTED SPINNERS. South east front has taking-in doors to left on all three floors. Attached to centre two storey engine house, boiler house and economizer clad in brick with similar curved parapets, truncated circular brick stack attached. North-west facade seventeen bays with central two bays masked by four storey tower housing rope race.
INTERIOR: has open floor areas with brick walls defining central rope race. Two rows of concrete piers supporting cross beams and concrete floors. This fine example of a textile mill constructed by the very latest reinforced concrete system, is the best preserved and earliest example of its type to survive in Yorkshire.
