SU 86 SW Yateley Potley Hill Road 3/20 (South side, off) Staplens Cottage
II
House. Probably early mid Cl6, altered Cl7 and late C20. Timber frame with wattle and daub infill, clad in painted brick; plain tile roof; painted brick stack. One and a half storeys, 2 bays, the left bay slightly narrower and both originally open to roof (floor inserted C17); added 1 storey bay on right. Late C20 imitation-leaded upvc windows, mostly 2 light casements. Central late C20 porch with plank door flanked by windows with cambered brick arches; 2 gabled domers above; wall post exposed at right corner; one window to addition. External stack at left end with offsets and metal hatch door. Left return has a small window to left side of stack on each floor, and exposed tie-beam and collar. Rear: C20 door is C20 open cabled porch with 3 light window to right, and 2 light window to left on each floor, that to attic in gabled dormer. Further left is outshut with stack risking beside dormer. Interior: evidence of original partition wall between bays on both floors, with arched head of former doorway on ground floor at front end. Framing survives particularly well on 1st floor having large scantling jowelled wall posts arch-braced to chamfered, cambered, tie beams, wall plates, collared trusses, arched wind braces, through purlins, sooted rafters. The original right hand gable apex has wattle and daub on external side un-limewashed, possibly indicating that there was always a building against this end. The upper floor is a Cl7 insertion, having chamfered spine-beams with lambs tongue stops; on slight chamfer on some joists. Large fireplace with timber bressumer to ground floor, left end.
