GV II

Former Burnley Co-operative Society premises; now in multiple occupation by various shops, and the upper floors in process of conversion at time of survey (1991). Dated 1885, 1889 and 1899 at parapet level (in north to south order), the 1st two by GB Rawcliffe of Burnley and the last by Thomas Bell, also of Burnley. Probably steel-framed, with cladding of sandstone ashlar and hipped slate roofs. Renaissance style. Irregular plan in 3 portions but presenting a long continuous facade. EXTERIOR: 3 tall storeys over a basement (which is exposed at the rear), 3+5+3 wide bays. All 3 portions have banded pilasters and a cornice at ground floor, a panelled band between the 1st and 2nd floors, a plain frieze, and parapets with central pediments, but the details differ from block to block. The earliest, at the north end, has a wide 3-window central bay with arcaded round-headed windows at 1st floor and segmental-headed windows at 2nd floor; narrower outer bays with large transomed 6-light windows; and a parapet with a pedimented plaque in the centre and inscriptions: 1885/ BURNLEY/ CENTRAL/ CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY/ STORES The larger central block has a 3-window centre; a doorway at ground floor of the 1st bay in Venetian window form with Ionic colonnettes; coupled round-headed windows on both upper floors with set-in colonnettes of polished pink granite (Tuscan at 1st floor, Corinthian at 2nd floor); a frieze between the upper floors inscribed "CENTRAL / 1889 / STORES"; and a balustraded parapet with a pedimented central feature containing a carved beehive and lettering "SWEETS OF INDUSTRY". The south block is similar to the north block, but has a balustraded parapet with a central pediment and raised lettering: 1899/ BURNLEY/ CENTRAL / CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY / STORES The right-hand return wall has various very large transomed windows; the rear has (inter alia) tall cross-windows at ground floor, tall mullioned windows above, and a tall square chimney stack. INTERIOR: staircase lined with decorative glazed tiles; former meeting hall and boardroom at 1st floor. Forms group with No.10 (qv) and Nos 12 & 14 (qv) opposite, collectively representing the growth of the Burnley

Co-operative Society from 1862-1905.
