SD83SW HOLME ROAD, Stoneyholme 906-1/3/251 (West side) 31/10/73 Royle Lodge and gate piers

II

Entrance lodge to former Royle Hall (demolished), with 2 gate piers. Gate piers probably early to mid C18; lodge probably mid C19, altered and recently extended. The gate piers, of sandstone ashlar, approx 1 metre square in plan and approx 3 metres high, each have a plain frieze, moulded cornice and a chamfered and moulded pyramidal pedestal with a ball finial. The lodge, of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and a stone slate roof, is L-plan, in Jacobean style, one-and-a-half storeys, with a 1-window east gable to the drive, a short 1-window gabled north wing and an added lean-to porch in the angle. Both gables have gable copings with kneelers, both have a large formerly 3-light mullioned window at ground floor with a chamfered surround but now lacking the mullions, the east gable has a 2-light mullioned window above and the north gable has a stepped 3-light mullioned window, both these with hood-moulds. The south side has a tall chimney stack with coupled flues. Extensive C20 single-storey additions to south and west sides, in matching materials. INTERIOR not inspected.
