The Old Red Lion Hotel

Farmhouse, subsequently farm and inn combined; now public
house. 1865 re-build of early C18 building. Painted render on
sandstone, with freestone dressings and slate roof. Irregular
plan on corner site, with main range parallel to Manchester
Road, curved corner and short range to St James Street.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic, 1:3:4 windows, with a low
plinth, pilasters, plain frieze and moulded cornice with
blocking course. The curved 3-window portion forming the
corner has a slightly raised centre incorporating a large
round-headed doorway in an elaborate architrave with broad
pilasters and massive crocketed brackets carrying a prominent
cornice surmounted by cast-iron railings; flanked at ground
floor by windows of 2 segmental-headed sashed lights with
carved columnar mullions. To the right the 4-window main range
has another large round-headed doorway in the 2nd bay, with
broad channelled pilasters which have crocketed caps, run-out
voussoirs and a lion keystone, and a plain frieze with moulded
cornice; one segmental-headed window to the left and 2 to the
right. Both doorways have panelled doors and large fanlights.
At 1st floor both these portions have 4-pane sashed windows
with raised sills and plain surrounds. The single-bay portion
to St James Street has a panelled door and oblong window under
large traceried overlights and a continuous fascia with
moulded cornice, and at 1st floor a 2-light sashed window with
carved columnar mullion. The roof has 5 gabled dormers with
bargeboards, and 3 stone chimney stacks.
