GV II
House; later divided into a row of 3 houses and shops; now one shop with living accommodation. Early to mid C16 with C17 and C20 alterations. Timber-framed; rendered in panels on the upper storey; C20 plaintiles. Frame in 3 long bays with an internal chimney-stack between the 1st and 2nd bays from the east. A plain rebuilt rectangular red brick shaft to the chimney. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, cellar and attics: 3 window range: 3-light Edwardian casements with vertical glazing-bars above a transom. 3 gabled C17 dormers with fluted bargeboards have 2-light casement windows with square leaded panes and original wrought-iron fittings. 3 Edwardian shop fronts with recessed doors: panelled stall risers to part; continuous fascia with blind box. 2 late C19 rear extensions, rendered. INTERIOR: a small modernised cellar below the west bay. On the ground storey, a heavy chamfered main beam in the eastern bay and a cambered fireplace lintel. On the 1st storey, the 2-bay room to the west of the stack has chamfered main beams with later trimmers inserted to support the attic floor. The jowled posts of the open truss carry a cambered tie-beam with small solid braces which support a crown-post, now within the attic. The crown-post is tall, plain and of rectangular section, braced 2 ways to the collar-purlin only. All rafters concealed: there has been some C20 repair to the roof. The eastern bay and chimney-stack may be of slightly later date with the collar-purlin set at a lower level than in the rest of the roof. The attic storey was inserted in the later C17 and the floors have their original wide oak boarding.
