House. Early C17 with later alterations. Timber-framed and
rendered; horizontal boarding to north gable wall; corrugated
asbestos roof. A chimney-stack at the south end has a plain
red brick shaft.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics; possibly part of a longer
range. 2 window range: 12-pane sashes in flush cased frames,
one boarded. 2 boarded windows to the ground storey. 2
flat-headed dormers have old 2-light single bar casement
windows. 2 entrance doors, one to part of the ground storey
only.
INTERIOR: some main components of the timber frame are exposed
inside. The bay at the south end has a chamfered ceiling beam
on the ground storey and very long jowls to the main posts in
the room above. The remaining 2 bays have a lower ceiling
level to the ground storey: any visible ceiling beams are
boxed, but wallplates and main posts are exposed. An upper
fireplace has a bolection-moulded surround. The attics are
plastered.
Adjoining the south-west corner of the house is one wall of a
former timber-framed building: in 2 narrow bays with close
studding and a middle rail above a high brick plinth. It is
not clear whether this framing formed part of No.96B Risbygate
Street.
