Built with money inherited by a Mrs Hare from a Quaker brother and sister called Fennell, and intended for the occupation of impecunious Quaker women prepared to promote the work of the Friends. Later used as police housing. Red brick with dressings in white brick; slate roofs. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. One internal and 2 end chimney-stacks with corbelled tops. Projecting gabled wings to north and south have bargeboards supported by arched braces and bracketing and an ornate oculus in each apex. 6 main windows across the upper front, all sashes with a single vertical glazing-bar in segmental-arched openings, including single windows in the wings flanked by small additional casements. On the ground storey, the wings have square projecting bays with sloping slate roofs and 3-light windows of mullion-and-transom type with small side lights. The centre has 2 sash windows, similar but larger than those above. Entrances to the 2 ground storey flats are in small porches with single pitch roofs on the inner sides of the wings. A flight of outside stairs on the outer side of each gable leads to an upper porch entry with single-pitch roof for each of the upper flats. INTERIOR: not inspected.
