Derwen House
II
House, used as school. 1831, with later alterations. Stuccoed. Bitumen-coated slate hipped roofs with deep bracketed eaves. Rendered axial stacks. STYLE: Picturesque stuccoed villa.
PLAN: approximately square on plan with entrance on east side and principal rooms on the south garden front. Minor later C19 or C20 extensions on rear north and west sides.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic. Nearly symmetrical 3-bay east front with windows disposed to the right; 12-pane sashes and central doorway with stone Tuscan portico with paired columns; two hipped dormer breaking the eaves. South garden front, 1:2 bays, left bay set back; sashes with glazing bars, tripartite on ground floor right; centre large French casement with side lights and tripartite window above with segmental fanlight, both with console brackets.
Rear north and west elevations have minor later C19/20 extensions. INTERIOR: not inspected but reported as having original joinery intact, including panelled doors, open-string staircase with stick balusters and moulded mahogany handrail wreathed over newel; servants' stair has unusual wreathed handrail; landing has vaulted plaster ceiling with lantern; pair of mahogany bookcases with volute and anthemion cresting; chamber has splayed panelled window shutters. Chimneypieces appear to be mostly Edwardian. Circa 1930's shower in bathroom.
