Country house. 1827 for John Cornthwaite Hector MP, a Petersfield banker. Stuccoed brick. Twin-span slate hipped roofs with deep eaves. Rendered brick axial stacks. STYLE: Regency. PLAN: rectangular on plan: 5-bay front with central entrance leading to axial hall, with principal rooms on right giving onto verandah overlooking garden, and secondary rooms, staircase and service wing on left. The interior arrangement has been altered by making the centre room on the garden front the entrance hall. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys. Symmetrical 5-bay front with restored 12-pane sashes, those on ground floor taller; central entrance with paired Tuscan columns to portico supporting large entablature and with glazed double doors. Right-hand return, 3-bay garden front with verandah in form of colonnade with paired Tuscan columns with entablature, 12-pane sashes, 2 on ground floor converted to French casements, that at centre with side-lights.
Rear has large later C19 bay on ground floor, 2-storey service wing on left [E] with hipped roofs; behind the service wing a C20 conservatory. INTERIOR: much of the original joinery intact including panelled doors, window shutters and some chimneypieces. Original staircase with stick balusters, column newels and mahogany handrail, and later C19 staircase with cast-iron balustrade and moulded handrail. Some the chimneypieces replaced by later marble Neo-classical chimneypieces.
