Summary

A shop and former dwelling of early-C19 date with C20 alterations.

Reasons for Designation

15 Westgate Street is listed at Grade II for the following principal reason:

Architectural interest:

* it is a good example of an early-C19 dwelling, later converted, which reflects contemporary architectural tastes and construction techniques.

Historic interest:

* as part of the development of Westgate Street over many centuries.

Details

Formerly a dwelling, now a shop dating from the early C19, with C20 and C21 alterations.

MATERIALS: brick construction with a slate roof and a front elevation faced in ashlar.

PLAN: a double-depth block with a room that extends at the rear, behind the back of number 13 Westgate Street (listed at Grade II).

EXTERIOR: of three storeys, with an attic and single-bay front, the principal elevation includes a C20 shopfront on the ground floor. On the first floor, a cornice across the front is recessed to form the lintel to a tripartite window with a semi-circular arch that has a moulded architrave surround and solid tympanum above the lintel. Below the sill of the second-floor window, there is a shallow panel across the width of the front with a thin moulded frame. Both windows have a wide central horned sash flanked by narrow horned sashes. There is a crowning cornice above the fascia and a parapet.

INTERIOR: the building contains C20 linings to the shop. The staircase was reinstated during C21 alterations, but the upper floors have not been inspected. Below, there is a brick-walled cellar.
