Pair of houses. Late C18, altered mid C19. Stuccoed and
whitewashed brick. Concrete pantiles on the roof. 2 storeys;
4-window range. Each house in 2 bays separated by a round
entrance arch leading to a passage to rear. The archway has
cast-iron gates. Ground floor rusticated. Two C20 doors
flanking the central arch, both under recessed arches. No.83
has a 6/6 horned sash set in a recess to left and 2 similar
sashes to first floor. Between these first-floor sashes is a
plaque bearing the following legend: `J.S. Cotman/ Painter and
Etcher/ lived here from April 1812/ until December 1823'.
No.84 with late C20 top-hung casements. Gabled roof with 2
flat-topped C20 dormers fitted with casements. 2 ridge stacks.
The rear has a large single-storeyed gabled service wing lit
through late C20 casements. Rear wall of houses also with C20
casements.
INTERIOR of No.83: stick-baluster staircase with turned
newels. The balusters replaced in 1991. Re-roofed 1984-85,
including No.84.
