Synagogue. 1925-6, by Delissa Joseph, under the supervision of Joseph Sunlight. Red brick with some Portland stone dressings (roof concealed) .Rectangular plan with projecting wings and porch. Two storeys, symmetrical; a centra1; porch of white stone, with pilasters, cornice and parapet, and recessed doorway with geometrical overlight, flanked by large rectangular 2-storey wings (stair turrets) each of which has a raised centre panel with a white stone doorway at ground floor, a round-headed window with radiating glazing bars and margin panes at 1st floor, and a brick cornice and parapet with upstands; and similar windows in the return sides. A lower 2-storey narthex links these 3 elements to the main vessel, which has pilastered 3-bay side walls with 3 windows on each floor of each bay, those to the upper floor arranged in Venetian form. Interior (as inspected in 1988): narthex with entrance vestibule flanked by cloakrooms and stairs; impressive main vessel with Ionic columns rising through galleries and supporting an entablature which returns to form an arch over the Ark; polished white marble steps and parapet to Ark, and tebah (or reading desk) of the same material; Austrian oak furnishings. Fine example of a synagogue of this period.
