War memorial. 1921 by (Sir) Bertram Mackennal. Buff Derbyshire sandstone on a granite base with bronze inscription tablets. Each face of the square shaft consists of a raised cross, above which is a wreath with fillets. The shaft, with a shallow pyramidal top, stands on a five-stage stepped base; the second highest is loped and the lowest is of granite. Principal inscription reads 'IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM PINNER WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-1919. IT IS BETTER FOR US TO DIE IN BATTLE THAN TO BEHOLD THE CALAMITY OF OUR PEOPLE'. HISTORY: This memorial was unveiled on 16th January 1921 by Maj-Gen Lord Cheylesmore, chairman of the Middlesex Territorial Association. See Harrow Observer, 21st January 1921.
