II

House. 1770. Demolished behind the facade c1970. By Robert Adam. Limestone ashlar, 2 ashlar ridge stacks and slate hipped roof with conical section to the centre. Neo-classical style. 2 storeys; 9-window range. A symmetrical front has a plat band, fluted frieze, modillion cornice and blocking course; 6/6-pane sashes; the centre section set forward containing a shallow 3-window bow, with a central door with eared architrave and floating cornice. Lead downpipe in the left re-entrant. INTERIOR: completely rebuilt. HISTORICAL NOTE: built onto a mid C17 house which stood facing the road, from which a fine fire surround and panelling was transferred to No.3 Market Hill (qv).
