GV II

House, originally a pair. c1860. By Samuel Pountney Smith. Ashlar faced, brick to rear, with slate mansard roof partly laid in scallop bands of contrasting Westmorland slate. French Baroque style. 2 storeys with attics, each house a 3-window range. Side entrances in architraves with entablatures carried on console brackets. Large stair window alongside in gable return. Front elevation has paired central canted bay windows, one with wrought-iron balustrade replacing original cast-iron work. Outer 4-pane sash windows, and single-light windows each side to entrance block. 3 dormers in roof, which is stepped down over entrance block at each side. Window heads and cornice in contrasting red sandstone. Service stairs in projecting towers to rear, which has basement area to service rooms. INTERIOR: entrance halls in early C18 local style, with wall-panelling and staircases with fine turned balusters, swept moulded rail and carved tread ends. Dado panelling, with fluted pilasters in left hand unit. The houses were built as speculations by Pountney Smith, who acquired the property c1860. An interesting and early example of the application of a local traditional and revived carpentry style to a Domestic Revival composition.
