Primary school. 1880, with mid C20 alterations. By ER Robson. For the Sheffield School Board. Coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and steep pitched gabled and hipped slate roofs, the main roof topped with a swept-sided stone bell turret with single round-arched opening. 2 ridge and single side wall stacks. E-plan. EXTERIOR: first floor band, coped main gables. 2 storeys; 5 x 4 windows. East front, to school yard, has 3 through-eaves dormers with a segment-arched double sash with keystone and traceried central light to fanlight. Between each pair of dormers, a flat-headed double sash. Below, 5 segment-arched double sashes with transoms and tripartite fanlights. Each gable is topped with a pedestal and segmental pediment, and has a large round-arched window in a recess, flanked by single smaller segment-arched windows in the same style. Below, a round-arched central window with keystone, flanked by smaller flat-headed windows. Rear gables have identical features. Each return has a gabled through-eaves dormer with segment-arched double sash and keystone, and below, a similar window. Hipped central rear projection has 2 large 3-light cross casements and below, 2 double sashes with wooden mullions. Below these, single storey full width mid C20 brick addition with coped parapet. Beyond, on either side, a single window on each floor. INTERIOR not inspected. Almost all the early schools built by the Sheffield School Board were designed by local architects. ER Robson, architect to the London School Board, was employed to design the Central Schools and School Board Offices (qv), as well as 2 board schools, of which this is one. The other is at Heeley Bank (qv), and dates from 1880. (Researches by G Hague, Sheffield City Council).
