Private theatre. c1893, with additions and alterations c1956 and c1989. For William Webster. Rock-faced stone, partly with patterned tile hanging, with ashlar dressings and gabled and pyramidal plain tile roofs. Coped brick side wall stack. EXTERIOR: single storey. Square stage enclosure has to left a lean-to projection forming the stage wing, and behind this, a C20 lean-to addition, both with C20 doors. Right return has a C20 addition covering the stage door. Truncated pyramidal roof with large square wooden ventilator with hipped lead roof and a pediment on each side. Octagonal wooden lantern with ogee lead dome and finial. Rectangular auditorium has a gable with bargeboards on brackets and sham timber-framing, with a canted wooden oriel window, now boarded. Below the oriel, a Renaissance Revival ashlar doorcase with splayed sides. Round-cornered doorway with large keystone bracket, flanked by strapwork terms. Additional curved brackets to the oriel window. This entrance is covered by a flat-roofed mid C20 addition. Returns have a 3-light stone mullioned window, and above it, a small 2-light opening. Towards the rear, a blocked single light window. Left return has a lean-to projection for a fireplace. INTERIOR has largely original auditorium with coved ceiling and moulded round cornered proscenium arch with foliage band and crest. On either side, towards the front, round-arched doors. Towards the rear, 3-light cross mullioned windows. At the rear, gallery with renewed panelled front and wooden winder stair. Renewed central double doors. Stage area has hipped roof structure with cross beams to the lantern. The theatre remained in private hands till c1956, and is still in use by amateur companies.
