GV II

Bank and manager's house. 1901. Red brick with ashlar and granite dressings and hipped slate roof with 2 coped side wall stacks. Renaissance Revival style. EXTERIOR: plinth, rusticated corner pilasters, modillion eaves, balustrade with pedestals. 3 storeys plus attics; 4 x 3 windows. On the first floor, 3 plain sashes with double keystones, and above, 3 smaller sashes, all with projecting surrounds. Above again, a box dormer. Below, slightly projecting portico with 2 granite Doric columns, flanking pilasters and entablature. 3 round-arched openings with voussoirs and enriched keystones, with two 2-light casements to right, with scrolled wrought-iron guards. To left, a pair of glazed doors with round-headed lights and oval toplights with glazing bars, and wrought-iron gates. Beyond, to right, entrance bay to manager's house. Oval first floor window with keystone, and above, a set back bay with a plain sash. Below, a moulded ashlar doorcase with scroll keystone and segment-headed half-glazed door and overlight. Above the door, a small plain sash. Left return has fenestration identical to the front, but with 3 ground floor windows. INTERIOR: largely original interior has banking hall with heavily enriched cornice and cross beam ceiling. Moulded round-arched windows with scroll keystones, those to the left return with etched glass. Panelled wooden counter with fluted columns topped with grotesques, and segment-headed glazed screens behind. 3 pedimented doorcases with pulvinated friezes and panelled doors. Elaborate wooden internal porch with glazed double doors and 4 oval mirrors. (An Architectural Survey of Urban Development Corporation Areas: RCHME: Sheffield: London: 1989-: 12).
