Church of St Thomas
II
Parish church. 1876, with late C20 internal alterations. By
Flockton & Abbot. Uncoursed rubble with ashlar dressings and
gabled and hipped slate roofs. Gothic Revival style.
PLAN: apsidal chancel, nave, south porch, south tower and
organ chamber, north transept and vestry.
EXTERIOR: plinth, sillband, coped gables, corbelled eaves.
Apsidal chancel has 7 plain single lancets. Nave has to south
a single lancet to west and 2-light pointed arch window to
east. North side has three 2-light pointed arch windows. All
have tracery of various patterns. West end has string course
and 2 single lancets with a round window above and between
them.
South porch has deep plinth and coped gable. Chamfered pointed
arched doorway with hoodmould and late C20 gates. Interior has
segmental pointed doorway with late C20 glazed doors.
Square south tower, 2 stages, has deep plinth, string course,
machicolated eaves and coped parapet, and pyramidal roof. To
south-east, a square stair turret. Lower stage has to south, 2
single lancets. Bell stage has a louvred double lancet opening
on each side. To east, a hipped organ chamber with a single
lancet to south.
North transept has to north a graduated triple lancet and to
west a single lancet. To north-east, a pointed doorway.
Adjoining lean-to vestry has 2 shouldered windows to north and
flat-headed single window to east.
INTERIOR: chancel has double chamfered arch with imposts, and
arch braced panelled ceiling and apse. Moulded sillband, and
to east, an ashlar blind arcade with inscription. Windows have
late C19 stained glass. To south, arch containing organ.
Nave has traceried wall plate and panelled wagon roof with
arch braces on corbels. West end has 2 bays divided by a late
C20 glazed blockwork screen forming meeting rooms and
mezzanine floor.
South transept, under tower, has double chamfered arch and
cross beam ceiling. East side has chamfered arch containing
organ, and tower door to south-east.
North transept has a pair of chamfered arches with a round
pier with foliage capital and resited traceried wooden
screens. Waggon roof. Internal porch with half-glazed doors,
and east door to vestry. Stained glass panel in east window.
FITTINGS include octagonal ashlar font with alabaster stem,
octagonal oak pulpit, traceried stalls and desk, and plain
benches, all late C19.
Memorials include marble, slate and ashlar war memorial tablet
with flanking columns, c1920, and wooden memorial panel c1945.
