GV II

Gates, gate piers and walls to churchyard. Mostly mid C19 with some earlier fabric. Limestone ashlar gate piers, quoins to intermittent piers and capping to walls, rubblestone to the rest. Pairs of gate piers to the south, west, north-west and north-east corners have truncated stepped pyramidal tops and chamfered plinths. Those to the south at the foot of a wide flight of steps to the south porch, support an overthrow of square-section twisted iron scrolled to the sides and centre with an empty lantern frame to the centre. The piers to the north-west have double iron gates with various horizontal bands of pierced quincunx to top, bottom and centre; those to the north-east flank the top of Proclamation Steps. The walls, formerly supporting iron railings, are articulated by low square piers at approx 5m intervals; from Proclamation Steps at the NE corner they step up for approx 40m along the east side, step down for approx 75m along the south side, flanking the south gate, extend approx 45m along the west side, 25m to the north and the wall to the north-east is a rubblestone revetment wall with widely spaced railings. Proclamation Steps, where Royal Proclamations were read, consist of a flight of 11 stone steps from Mill Street to the north-west corner of the churchyard, with railings to the east.
