Memorial statue. 1861. Designed by John Bell and cast by the Coalbrookdale Company. Removed from the General Cemetery, 1971. Life size draped standing figure on tapered square granite pedestal, with inscription and verses by Montgomery. Square sandstone plinth. James Montgomery, who died in 1854, was a noted local journalist and hymnologist. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Yorkshire: The West Riding: London: 1967-: 459).
