GV II*

5 crucible steel making shops, now stores. 1872. For Sanderson Brothers. Brick with stone dressings and Welsh slate and corrugated asbestos roofs. Single storey. 3:2:6:6:4 windows. Round headed openings with stone sills to mainly unglazed windows. 7 cross-ridge crucible stacks, each probably with 6 flues, and on the rear wall to Wilfrid Street, 2 smaller single stacks. Front elevation, to yard, has wooden cross casements, some with barred heads. 6 doorways enlarged and given steel or concrete lintels. Rear has similar blocked and boarded up windows. INTERIORS have crucible furnaces on either side, with iron brackets for crucible drying shelves and for tools. Strutted king post roof trusses. The Darnall Works site was developed initially in 1835. This range was added in 1872, increasing the works' capacity by 84 holes. Darnall Works was one of a number of large scale crucible steel works in Sheffield, but it is the last to survive and is unique in Britain.
