II
Cementation furnace. Late C19, restored mid C20. Brick with wrought-iron reinforcement. Conical tower, topped with a square flue with iron flap damper. Short coped flanking walls on 2 sides. On one side, a square access hole for loading and discharging, with a half-round stoke hole below. On the other side, a similar access hole with damper handles above. This furnace is designed for the manufacture of blister steel, the original raw material for crucible steel. Blister steel was little used for this purpose after c1870, but this furnace remained in use until 1952. It is the sole survivor of a characteristic industrial building once numerous in Sheffield. The cementation furnace is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
