Details
ABBEY ROAD TQ 2683 SW 11/75 New London Synagogue II Synagogue. 1882, by H H Collins. Red brick with channelled rustication to lower stage; slate roofs. Rectangular plan. North Italian Romanesque style to 3-storey front. Outer bays each have round-arched 2-light windows above paired blind windows with railhead decoration to tympanum set in round-arched architrave with flanking pilasters; projecting bays with similar one-light windows flank pedimented central bay with large round arched architrave to 3-light window with balcony, over projecting portico with arcade of 3 semi-circular arches set on coupled columns with foliate capitals and central bracketed pediment; semi-circular arches over 3 half-glazed double doors. Five-bay side elevations have 3 round-arched windows above shouldered windows to each bay; porch with semi-circular arched door to rear. Interior: entrance half with moulded cornices to coffered ceiling; 3-bay semi-circular arched arcades set on fluted columns with foliate capitals leading to outer bays each with decorative wrought-iron balustrade to staircase. Synagogue interior of 5-bays with gallery to 3 sides: cast-iron fluted and coupled columns with stylised Composite capitals and decorative spandrels to beams of coffered ceiling with foliate coved cornices and original sun burners. Triple arcade to west end. Italianate-style ark, of wood with Ionic columns and entablature supported on four semi-circular arches with pilasters to central pediment; bimah in similar style. Stained-glass windows. Interior noted as displayed, a good use of structural cast iron.
