5/41 Barn north-east of Common House Farmhouse

GV II

Integrated barn with byre, stable and dovecote. Early C19 with C17 origins. Single storey and loft. 5 truss bays. Red brick in Flemish and English Garden Wall Bonds, Slate roof.

The elevation to Willington Lane (east) has a 3-course deep projecting band at loft level rising up over the segmental arch to a blocked carriageway opening. This elevation is in Flemish Bond and has six groups of breathers, in diamond pattern at loft level and three and a door below. The south gable-end, also in Flemish Bond, has six projecting courses, with dove entry holes above; in the gable, also a pitch hole door and a diamond shaped stone plaque. Both gables have stone copings with ogee kneelers. The elevation to the Farmhouse (west) is in English Garden Wall Bond and has two square pitch holes with doors, three single and one double boarded door all on strap hinges and a single hopper light window. Breathers are in diamond and cross shaped patterns. The roof is of large slates with a stone ridge.

Interior The roof trusses are all different, collar trusses with three and four vertical posts, a strutted truss and a King Post truss with purlin struts. The trusses support a ridge tree and single line of purlins with wind braces.

The walls which surround the farmyard and link the buildings are of brick or stone with stone copings.
