SK 4937 SW BEESTON AND STAPLEFORD NOTTINGHAM ROAD Stapleford (south side)

4/34 St. John's Primary School 2.2.87 G.V. II National school, now Church of England Primary School. 1836. Tudor Revival style. Brick with slate roofs. Ashlar plinth, quoins, dressings and hood moulds. Rainwater heads inscribed 'W'. 2 ridge and 3 gable stacks. Single and 2 storeys, 9 bays. Windows are mainly mullioned glazing bar casements with hood moulds. Front has central 2 storey gabled wing with parapeted canted bay window and lower gabled wing at each end. Bay window has 3 casements. To left, 4 casements. To right, studded Tudor arched door and beyond, 4 casements. Return angle to right has a similar door. Flanking gables have each a shield panel. Central gable has casement and above it, damaged panel inscribed "National School". East gable has to left, late C19 addition with large casement. To right, four centred arched recess containing stepped head casement. Above, niche containing double lancet. West gable has to left Tudor arched door, and to right, arched recess with 2 casements. To right again, a casement. Rear has off-centre gable and gabled wing. To right, late C19 gabled addition. Irregular fenestration, mainly C19 casements with segmental heads.
