House, now Regional Office of British Coal. c.1810. Built by
the Barber family. Brick, stuccoed, with hipped slate roof.
Ashlar dressings, plinth, first floor band, bracketed eaves. 8
ridge stacks. 2 storeys, 6 bays wide by 5 bays deep. Square
plan with 2 storey service wing. Windows are glazing bar sashes
and metal casements c.1947. Those to main front have moulded
architraves. Main front has off-centre Corinthian portico.
Moulded doorway with overlight. Flanked to left by 2 and to
right by 3 sashes with aprons. Above, 6 sashes. Return angle to
north has 2 sashes on each floor. Hipped service wing, 7 bays,
has 7 casements on each floor, plus off-centre door. South side
has 3 French windows and to right, 2 sashes. Above, 5 sashes.
Garden front has recessed central bay with 2 sashes flanked by
single French windows. Beyond, 2 storey round bay windows with
conical roofs and 2 sashes on each floor. Above, central plain
sash flanked by single glazing bar sashes. Interior has half-
round stair well containing curved cantilever stair with ramped
handrail. Above, elaborate plasterwork lantern. Principal rooms
have pilastered doorcases, classical cornices and panelled
ceilings. Fireplaces removed.
