A pair of houses, joined on the east with a splayed corner to No.50 Crown Street (qv). 1840. Rendered brick front, red brick to sides and rear. Slate roof. An internal chimney-stack with a plain rectangular white brick shaft. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and basements. 5 window range: 12-pane sashes with semicircular arched heads to the ground and 1st storeys, and 9-pane sashes to the top storey, all in plain reveals. The 1st-storey windows are set into arched recesses and have cast-iron balconies in Neo-Greek style with palmettes. Doorways with semicircular arched heads; 2 4-panelled doors have fanlights with radiating glazing-bars. The basement openings below the ground-storey windows have cast-iron grilles in front with ornate balusters. It is known that the houses were built in 1840 from the Minutes of the Paving Commissioners, which record a dispute about the balconies overhanging the pavement. INTERIOR: not inspected.
