HILDENBOROUGH
LONDON ROAD (north east side)
The Flying Dutchman Public House

II

Public House. C17 or earlier origins with extensive remodelling of the circa
1840s. Framed construction, thoroughly underbuilt in brick with some
weatherboard cladding, the C19 front elevation brick with tile-hanging to the
first floor; peg-tile roof; brick stacks.

Plan: South-facing. Double depth plan, 2 rooms wide, the early parts of the
building to the rear (north) and west. Later alterations have obscured the
original arrangement but both the 2-cell, 2-phase west crosswing and the rear
range, roofed on a west east axis, are probably C17. The front block, roofed
parallel to the rear block, is a circa 1840s addition.

Exterior: 2 storeys, the crosswing with an attic. Gabled roofs.
Asymmetrical 2-window front, the gable of the west crosswing to the left, the
main entrance alongside into the south block with a C19 enclosed timber porch
with curly bargeboards with pendants. C20 door into the crosswing to the left
under a pent roof. 2- and 3-light C19 or early C20 small-pane timber
casements. C19 axial stack to the south block. 3 windows to the left (north)
return, which is weatherboarded, with C19 or C20 casement windows with an
axial stack. The rear (north) block has an axial stack with a handmade brick
shaft and C19 cap.

Interior: Largely modernized on the ground floor with internal partitions
altered. The rear block stack has an open fireplace on the west side (in the
lounge bar) with handmade brick jambs, a chamfered timber lintel and a bread
oven.

Roof: The west crosswing roof is C17 with a tie-beam, queen posts and clasped
purlins. The roof of the rear wing is largely inaccessible but most of the
rafters appear to have been replaced.
