MAYFAIR WI CURZON STREET TQ 2880 SE 80/251 No 39 GV II Terraced house. Early/mid C18; refronted C19 and closet wing at rear added late C19. Stucco, upper floors channelled to appear as ashlar. 4 storeys and base- ment. 2 windows. Architraved entrance to doorway with reeded jambs, door having single panel to upper half, overlight and cornice to porch. Architraved ground floor sash. First floor sill band to architraved casements with console bracketed pediments and cast iron window guards of geometric pattern. Second floor 2-pane sashes with bracketed architraves. Cornice at third floor level forming sill band to architraved sashes with glazing bars. Narrow cornice below balustraded parapet. Attached railings to area. Rear elevation rendered with flush casement and sash; slated mansard roof with dormer. Multi-coloured stock brick closet wing with segmental arches to recessed 4-pane sashes; supported on cast iron columns. Interior plan unaltered. Panelled hall with early C20 elliptical arch with keystone and egg and dart architrave; supported on Ionic pilasters and scrolled consoles. Dog leg stair, early C20 at ground floor, open string with turned balusters and panelled pillar newel with ball finial; middle flights closed string with turned balusters (early C20), column newel (early C18) and mahogany handrail. Upper flight and landing early/mid C18, closed string, turned balusters, column newels and moulded handrail. Beaded dado rail to stairwell the full height. Most rooms with original panelling and cornices. First floor back room with half-glazed china cupboard having cocks head hinges. Second floor front room, early/mid C18 fireplace with eared architrave and dentil cornice. This house is an unusual survival in the Mayfair area of a modest scale C18 dwelling.
