Pair of adjoining cottages. Probably early C19. Brick ground floor, the
first floor framed construction with tile-hanging; peg-tile roof; brick
stacks.
Plan: North-facing. A pair of adjoining mirror plan cottages, each
consisting of a principal parlour/kitchen at the front, heated from end
stacks, with unheated service rooms in integral rear outshuts. Each cottage
has a straight stair rising against the party wall and front doors on the
north elevation towards the centre. The right hand cottage, No 85, has been
modernized inside to the partition between the main room and outshut has been
removed.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. Symmetrical 3-bay front, the left hand
cottage, No 83, preserving the early C19 plank front door, No 85 with a C20
front door. Small pane C19 and C20 timber casement windows, 3-light to the
ground floor, 2 2-light windows to the first floor and 2 flat-roofed attic
dormers with diamond leaded panes. Projecting end stacks with tile-hung off-
sets, the left end stack with a projecting bread oven.
Interior: No 85 modernized but preserving its original stair. No 83 is very
complete internally with early C19 joinery. The framing, exposed on the
interior of No 83, is close-studded and of slender scantling.
Roof: Not inspected.
A pair of small, attractive vernacular cottages.
