BILLINGHAM A1130 MIDDLESBROUGH TO NZ 474 201 SP/743 BILLINGHAM ROAD 0/143 Billingham Branch Bridge II Road bridge over disused railway line. 1934, by Mott, Hay and Anderson, Engineers; built by Dorman Long & Co Ltd. Steel, concrete and brick. Slightly skew, with troughing deck supported on 9 longitudinal steel girders, each of 5 welded spans. The spans are welded to the supporting stanchion-legs and the outer spans extended towards and support the centre-slung length of the centre span. The southern-most span is similarly slung. At each end of the bridge the girders rest on reinforced concrete beams supported on reinforced concrete columns sunk into the abutments. Rockers at the feet of the stanchion legs rest on mild steel slabs dowelled to trans- verse reinforced concrete beams. Additional support is given below ground by framing of reinforced concrete piles, struts, beams and cylinders. Panelled brick parapet with concrete plinth and copings. Reputed to be the first welded steel bridge in Britain. (W P Haldane & G Roberts: Minutes of Proc. of Inst. of Civil Engrs, Vol 240, 1935, pp 537-566).
