Details
HILDENBOROUGH POWDER MILL LANE (east side) TQ 54 NE 5/194 Grove Cottage - II
Small house. Late C18/early C19. Flemish bond brick with blue headers to the ground floor, tile-hung above; peg-tile roof; brick stack.
Plan: Sited down a track off Powder Mill Lane, the house faces east and is associated with a detached barn. 2 rooms wide, with a kitchen/parlour to the left heated from the end stack and a service room to the right. The rear outshut is probably integral.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Almost symmetrical 2-window front with a C19 plank front door slightly to right of centre with a flat porch hood. The left end stack projects and has corbelled brick coping and tile-hung off-sets. Roof gabled at the left end, half-hipped at the right end and carried down as a catslide over the outshut. C19 casements, 2-panes per light with segmental arched heads, the windows to the left of the front door 3-light, those to the right 2-light. On the right return there is a door into the outshut and a small window.
Interior: Not accessible at time of survey (1988).
A good example of a small traditional house with an unspoiled exterior.
