GV II
Barn. Probably C17. Framed construction on a brick and ragstone rubble plinth; weatherboarded; peg-tile roof.
Plan: East-facing. Rectangular on plan, the main structure of 6 unequal bays, the 3 left hand (south) bays wider, then the threshing bay, with 3 narrower bays at the north end. Opposed threshing doors; rear outshut and front right outshut.
Exterior: Single-storey. Roof hipped and gabletted at the left end, gabletted and half-hipped at the right end. Asymmetrical east front with a pair of probably C19 full-heigh threshing doors approximately in the centre. Small doorway to the left of centre with 2 small C20 windows above, similar window to the front outshut. The rear elevation has a porch with hipped roof. The south return has 4 C20 windows.
Interior: Tie-beam and queen strut roof construction with clasped purlins and curved wind braces. The tie-beams are supported on jowled wall posts with straight braces to the ties. The large scantling wall framing has curved tension braces above the middle rail with some replacement of studs. The north end bay was originally partitioned off. The rear outshut partition has been removed.
A good example of a traditional barn of the region. The C20 windows are carefully scaled and positioned.
Group value with Great Forge Farmhouse.
