Details

UPPER BROOK STREET TW 2880 NW 68/106 No 26 and attached railings II GV Terraced town house, now offices. c1908/9 by Arnold Mitchell for J Monro Coats. Portland stone ashlar. Green Tilberthwaite slate roof steep stone pediment encasing attic dormers. Four storeys, attic and basement. Two windows. Doric portico supporting 'cast iron balcony to first floor window; double part-glazed doors. Canted bay of transom and-mullion windows rising from ground to second floor, with projecting cornice surmounted by a stone balustrade to fourth floor windows. Sashes above entrance 2-pane with stone transoms and aprons enriched with festoons and guttae; similar enrichment to second floor bay windows. Projecting modillion cornice. Pediment with two 2-light attic windows surmounted by a cartouche; carved stone enrichment at base angles. Lead rainwater heads and pipes to angle to the house. Attached cast iron railings to areas. Grand interior, especially to ground 'and first floors. Features include Neo-Adam entrance. hall paved in green and white marble tiles; stair with bellying out cast iron balusters and mahogany hand rail, lit by an oval lantern at third floor level. Ground floor front room Neo-Adamstyle with chimney piece (probably reproduction) and elaborate mahogany doors. Rear dining room oak panelled to high level, mostly re-used antique panelling; fireplace blocked but with carved oak overmantle. Very fine plasterwork frieze and ceiling in Ernest Gimson manner, probably by George Bankart and executed by the Bromsgrqve Guild; entwined roses and other foliage with small animals and birds. Long domed and panelled passage leading to rear room (library?) with similar very fine but more complex plasterwork frieze and ceiling; panelling to nearly full height and good carved'overmantle. Neo-Rococo first floor drawing rooms with good panelling and plasterwork; front room with Ionic screen; marble fireplace. Back room with thicker C17 style plasterwork in coved cornice area. Good quality mahogany and walnut doors throughout with elaborate cases. Second floor includes good marble fireplace. . A good.example of the arrangement and style of the grander Edwardian town house.
