Greenhouses
II
Greenhouses. First shown on a drawing of 1854 and by the firm of Jones and Clark, later Henry
Hope Ltd. Lean-to type with stock brick rear wall and plinth to front in flemish bond with
stone coping, wrought iron frames and glass panes. The structure is 28 bays long divided into
two sections. Front has cambered arches mainly buried under the soil, probably for planting
vines outside, and sloping roof with alternate bays opening. Most of the original glazing
survives. Each side and centre have Gothick arched opening with centre and left side retaining
half-glazed door. Interior has ventilation bricks and elaborate system of pulleys and brackets for
training vines. Originally northern range wired for vines and southern range wired for peaches.
