MILTON SP4435 10/11 Church of St. John the 08/12/55 Evangelist

GV II

Church. 1856 by William Butterfield. Built by Franklin's and Hopcrafts of Deddington. Regular coursed ironstone rubble and limestone dressings. Steeply pitched plain tile roof. Stone copings. Chancel, nave and central tower. Decorated style. 3-light chancel east window has intersecting tracery. Other windows include 2-light windows with trefoiled heads and windows with intersecting tracery. Bell tower of 3 stages has plain tile pyramidal roof and louvred trefoil headed windows to bell stage. Slits to stair. Steeply pitched plain tile roof to south porch, weatherboarded sides. South doorway: plain with moulded jambs. Interior: East window by F. Preedy of London. (Buildings of England: Oxfordshire, 1974, p.705; V.C.H.: Oxfordshire, Vol IX, p.36).
