4/30 Threshing barn 30m south west of Fosters Farmhouse
GV II
Threshing barn and adjoining cartshed. Date of 1601 on the frame of the barn to which "rebuilt 1848" has been added. Framed construction, clad in weatherboarding; clay tile roof, gabled at ends. The adjoining cartshed is also framed and weatherboarded with a clay tile roof, hipped at the east end. It is probably a later addition.
Plan: Built on an east west axis, a 3-bay barn with opposed full-height threshing doors in the centre and a north porch. The cartshed adjoins at the east end and is entered on the north side.
Exterior: The barn has a lean-to porch on the north side, the cartshed has 2 large north entrances.
Interior: Tie beam, queen post and clasped purlin construction, originally with concave braces between the jowled wall posts and tie beams, these replaced with straight braces, presumably in 1848. The trusses have intermediate birdsmouth ties. The scale of the 1848 rebuilding is difficult to determine. Some of the wall framing is probably of this date replacing braced timbers of larger scantling with the existing studs. A ridgeboard has also been introduced. On the middle rail of the north wall, east of the porch the date 1601 is carved. It appears to be genuine, as does the C19 date. Interior of cartshed not inspected.
