Rectory, now house. 1859 by William Burges. Red brick with stone
dressings, slate roof. Central direct entry plan with additional single
storey lean-to bay, and stair tower rising through full height of house, to
left. Two storeys and attics: 6 windows to ground floor, 5 to upper floor.
Symmetrical elevation. Lean-to porch on open timber frame to pointed
double-chamfered doorway under hoodmould. Double-leaf boarded door flanked
by three cross-mullion windows to each side, each with sills and shouldered
lintels under relieving arches. Chamfered first floor sill band. Five
similar windows, without relieving arches, with horizontal glazing bars, to
first floor. Three raking dormers with casements with glazing bars. Deep
overhanging eaves supported on giant curved and chamfered brackets springing
from corbels at first floor sill band level. Bargeboards with pierced
quatrefoil motif, end and axial stacks. Stair tower to left has similar
windows to main elevation under separate hipped roof. Interior: most
original features survive including a cut string stair with scrolled tread
ends, turned balusters, and moulded, wreathed, handrail. Right front room
has a white marble fire surround with coloured tiles, left front room, a
wooden fire surround with pulvinated frieze and Dutch tiles depicting
Biblical scenes; right rear room, a grey marble fire surround with tiles
depicting scenes from the novels of Sir Walter Scott. In addition there are
a large number of 6-panel doors and an unaltered set of servants rooms, with
cast-iron fireplaces, and in their original paintwork.
