Details
TQ 67 41 BRENCHLEY HIGH STREET, BRENCHLEY (north side) 15/92 Barn about 20m east of Portobello
GV II
Barn. Probably early C18 and contemporary with the main building phase of Portobello, the west end rebuilt in the early C19 to present a more polite and less agircultural facade to the garden. Framed construction, clad in weatherboarding, west end rebuilt in Flemish bond brick; peg-tile roof.
Plan: A 3-bay barn built on an east west axis, the west end overlooking the garden to the rear of Portobello; probably later outshut on the south side, present entrance on the south side into the end bay.
Exterior: Single-storey. The west end is tile-hung at the apex above a clock face in a moulded stone frame with vermiculated spandrels. The outshut has 5 C19 fixed iron frame windows with small panes; probably C20 4-light casement on the north side with square leaded panes. Weathervane on west end apex dated 1939.
Interior: Wall framing of light scantling with diagonal braces off the wall posts. Tie-beam roof construciton with queen posts and clasped purlins, the ties on jowled wallposts, with straight braces from post to tie.
Group value with Portobello, the rebuilt west end of the barn makes a special contribution to the setting of the house.
