House with attached pigshouses and garden wall. Probably late C16 origins with C19
alterations on earlier site. Extended in circa mid C19. Stone rubble largely
granite and blue elvan with dressed quoins. Scantle and rag slate roofs, the front
range with gable end on left and hipped end on right and the parallel rear range with
gable ends. Slate hung stone rubble end stack on left and axial stack to right of
centre.
Plan: Probably originally of two room and cross passage plan, the two rooms heated by
end stacks. The outshut on the right was probably built slightly later, either in
the C17 or in the C18 reusing earlier joinery. In the mid C19 a service range was
added across the rear containing a kitchen, larder and dairy. In the circa early C19
a range of pigshouses was added on the right hand end.
Exterior: Two storeys. Almost symmetrical main front with outshut extension on
right. 3:1 window front. Central entrance with rendered probably C19 slate porch
with hipped end and circa late C19 or C20 door in chamfered C19 frame. C19 2-light
casement to left and probably replacement 2-light casement on right. Three C19 2-
light casements on first floor. Set slightly back on right, a 2-storey range with
C19 plank door on ground floor and C19 2-light casement on first. To rear, 2-storey
range which is boarded above ground floor. Granite lintels to the ground floor
openings.
Attached on right hand end, row of pigs-houses with three pairs of openings with
granite jambs.
Garden wall to front of stone rubble with mounting block.
Interior: Partly remodelled in the late 1860s when the left hand room was partly
boarded, the stair was possibly inserted in the passage and the ground floor doors
were replaced. The left hand room has fairly slight chamfered ceiling beams with
straight cut stops and chamfered C17 timber lintel to fireplace with run-out stops.
The right hand room has a boarded ceiling which covers some heavy chamfered ceiling
beams (information from tenants). The fireplace has a roughly cut granite surround.
There is a door opening on the left which leads into the outshut extension. The mid
C19 range to rear of larder retains its salting trough, hooks and slatted ventilation
panels. The dairy remains also complete with large central slate table and slate
benches. First floor and roof structure not inspected.
In the outshut on the right, the ground floor has 3 heavy chamfered beams which may
have been reset. There are several blocked openings in the right hand end wall.
Manor of Tolcarne passed from Tolcarne family to George Kekewich. In 1630 sold by
John Kekewich to Richard Spoure of Trebartha.
