Details

STURMINSTER MARSHALL SY 99 NW CHARBOROUGH PARK 9/58 East Almer Lodge 18.3.55 - II A gateway, incorporating a lodge. c1840. Stucco. A classical design, with a tall arch flanked by plain wide pilasters, having simple mouldings to cornice and architrave, and a deep frieze containing a stone panel; at the top is a pediment filled with an armorial relief. The bold impost moulding continues at each side as the cornice to flanking single-storeyed pavilions (the lodge) which end in pilasters, each with a central window (blocked on the north elevation). Within the arch, there is a niche above a doorway. A small service wing, with a slate roof, extends at the west side. There are ornamental wrought iron gates. The panel on the road front (facing north) is inscribed "This Road from Wimborne to Dorchester was projected and completed through the instrumentality of J S W SAWBRIDGE ERLE DRAX Esq MP in the Years 1811 and 1812". The panel on the south side has a worn inscription, referring to the closure of the road by order of the Magistrates in 1811. RCHM
