Details

NORTH HILL SX 27 NE Pethins and garden wall to front 4/148 II GV House and garden wall to front. Probably mid C17 partly remodelled in early C18. Stone rubble, hung with asbestos slates on front and left hand elevations. Bitumen coated steeply pitched slate roof with hipped ends and hipped end to stair projection on rear. Stone rubble end stacks with brick shafts. Plan: Two room and cross passage plan with dog-leg stair to rear of passage. The left hand room was probably partitioned off in the C18 forming a parlour on the front and a very narrow dairy to rear. Exterior: Two storeys and attic. Symmetrical 3-window front. Central C20 doors with C20 open porch with hipped slate roof. C19 2-light casements to left and right. Three 2-light casements on first floor, partly replaced in C20 following earlier pattern. Rear elevation with stair projection rising above eaves. Stone rubble garden wall to front with granite coping. The wall was rebuilt in the C20, but retains a C19 iron gate on right and remains of C19 iron railings. Interior: Wide cross passage. The right hand room has heavy deeply chamfered beams with straight cut stops spanning the whole depth of the house suggesting that it was originally a single depth plan. In the left hand room these beams have been boxed in. The fireplaces are blocked by a C20 grate and by a Rayburn stove. The circa late C17 or early C18 dog-leg stair has a central timber newell rising from ground to attic providing extra strength. The heavy turned balusters vary in design at each stage, those to the first stage having been removed. Turned newels with small flat bun finials. C19 and C20 doors on ground and first floor and simple plank doors to attic. C18 roof structure.
