HARTLEPOOL ELWICK ROAD NZ 43 SE (south side) 3/65 Meadowcroft and Meadowside

GV II

Large villa, now as 2 dwellings. Dated 1895 on plaque in left gable end. Red brick with ashlar dressings; clay tiled roof; quasi Tudor style. Main garden front : 2-storey plus attic; 5 bays and one-storey entrance link to 2-storey right extension. First and 5th bays are cross-gabled; 2nd bay is an embattled tower with ½-octagonal front and recessed entrance under 4-centred arch. The 3rd bay has a large staircase window; and the 4th bay is narrow and set back. All windows are stone mullioned-and-transomed, some with stained glass, except in extension which has timber first-floor sashes and canted bay below. Large round bow window with parapet to ground floor of first bay; embattled oriel to first floor of 5th bay. Link entrance, under segmental arch, has side lights and 5 serpentine-headed small lights above. Entablature with foliage-carved frieze at 2nd-floor level of tower. Octagonal tower with embattled parapet and pyramidal roof, at north-west corner of the building.
