Details
MORCHARD BISHOP FORE STREET (north-east side) SS 7607 - 7707 Morchard Bishop 11/156 - No. ll(Old Maltsters) 26.8.65 GV II
Cottage, formerly 2 cottages. C18. Plastered cob on rubble footings; rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatched roof. Now a 3-room plan house facing south- west set between Nos. 10 and 12 Fore Street (q.v.). Left (north-western) end room was originally a 1-room plan cottage with stack in end party wall (adjoining No.12). Cob crosswall between left and centre rooms. Centre and right room were originally a 2-room plan cottage. Rear lateral stack to right (south-eastern) room. 2 storeys. Overall 4-window front of late C19 - early C20 casements with glazing bars and 2 C20 doors. Centre and right 3 windows form a symmetrical arrangement about central door. Interior: crossbeams to outer rooms are chamfered with runout stops. Both fireplaces are partly rebuilt with replacement lintels. Cottage is one of a row of 13 cottages with together form the longest continuous run of thatch-roofed buildings in Devon and probably the longest run in England.
