MORCHARD BISHOP FORE STREET (north-east side) SS 7607 - 7707 Morchard Bishop 11/157 - No. 12 (Saddlers) 26.8.65 GV II
Cottage, formerly 2 cottages. C18 and early C19. Plastered cob on rubble footings; rubble stack topped with C19 brick; thatched roof. Now a 2 room cottage facing south-west set between Nos 11 and 13 Fore Street (q.v.). C18 1 room plan cottage with rear diagonal corner stack is on right (south-eastern) side and early C19 1 room plan cottage added to left, its fireplace built into the back of C18 stack. 2 storeys. Irregular 2-window front of late C19 early C20 casements with glazing bars. Those on ground floor have smaller glass panes than first floor windows. Interior. Right room has plain chamfered cross beam and stone rubble diagonal corner fireplace with a chamfered and runout stopped oak lintel and brick side oven. Left room has square-sectioned crossbeam with C19 brick. Fireplace. Roof shows former hipped end of right cottage. Cottage is one of a row of 13 cottages which together form the longest continuous run of thatch-roofed buildings in Devon, and probably the longest run in England.
