Water tower. 1897. By Sir Ernest George and Alfred Yeates for George Cawston. Red brick; plaintile roof Decagonal on plan. 4 storeys. Ground floor entered through a round-headed plank door in south-west facet and lit through one slit window under gauged skewback arch to north-east facet: single-light casement. Off-set at first floor representing decrease in wall thickness. First and second floors lit through similar slit windows in alternate facets rising to top stage. Second floor with tie irons in form of numerals: 1897. Top stage corbelled out and tile-hung below continuous frieze of timber mullioned windows lighting walkway, 3 to each facet. Conical roof and spike finial. To south-east facet below corbel course is a tile-hung staircase spur on straight braces providing access to the internal glazed walkway. INTERIOR: ground floor with internal well. First and second floors reached by timber ladders through trapdoors. Top stage with steel water tank supported on 6 steel joists.
