House. Dated 1839.BY Lewis Vulliamy for R G Heathcote. Cream brick in Flemish bond with dressings of Roman cement and stone; slate roof. U-shaped plan, open on north side, 2-storeys with cellar, 4-storey tower. North elevation is of 8 bays the end bays projecting as short wings; tower to rear left. In Tudor style having: plinth; continuous hoodmould to ground floor; wooden mullioned and transomed windows with horizontal glazing bars; 4-centred-arched doorways; stepped dentilled eaves; coped raised verges; chimneys offset below clustered octagonal flues with red brick cornices. North elevation: central door with raised panels, sidelights, and overlight with geometric glazing bars to enter lights; date panel with coat of arms over; and cross-window above. Small windows either side on each floor; next bays have a cross-window with 4-light window over; and outer bays each have 1-light window with oriel above bridging angle with wing. Wings each have external stack flanked by windows. Hipped roof to tower. Garden elevation: gabled left-hand bay has 2-storey canted bay window with decorative 1st floor band and shield above. Doorway to next bay has decorative geometric glazing bars to overlight. Between bays 5 and 6 is turret with blind slit windows and ogee dome. Servants' wing on right. Interior: remaining contemporary features include panelled doors, shutters and walls; decorative architraves; dado and ceiling cornices; and fireplaces, including 2 with elaborate wooden cornices and over-panels, one of these possibly incorporating early C17 work. Stair hall has wall panelling; compartmental ceiling; and open-well stair with open string, turned balusters, ramped handrail, pendants, and newel finials. Room in west wing has elaborate cornice and probably later-C19 'wall-painting has been revealed comprising decorative panels with flowers. There has been a house on the site since the C16 at least, and probably some of the woodwork in the present house has come from the early C17 house known to have existed.
